Lions’ gifts
bring joy to Calvia residents
Life has improved for two Calvia
residents, thanks to gifts from the district Lions club.
When
Sister Teresa Alia fell out of bed three years ago, the damage to her back was
so bad that the injury has been monitored by specialist doctors ever since. But
that’s hardly surprising, given her age, because at 91 years old Sister Teresa
is the oldest resident of Calvia’s Convento San Pedro. A native of Toledo, she
joined the Calvia convent 70 years ago.
This
year, doctors told Sister Teresa that she needed a specially-designed,
adjustable bed which would make getting into and out of bed easier and also
help her get a good night’s sleep. When
the nuns of Convento San Pedro found that the bed would cost them almost €2,000,
they turned to Calvia Lions for help.

President
Jan Winblad von Walter said: “It was a pleasure for the Lions to be able to pay
for the bed. Sometimes a simple change
can make a huge difference to someone’s life. If the funds are available,
Calvia Lions are always happy to help.”
Sister
Teresa is delighted by the new piece of furniture. She said: “The bed is very
good. It’s comfortable and I can sleep
better now. I thank the Lions Club and pray for them.”
When
the Lions had an electric scooter returned to them a few weeks ago -- a
long-term loan that was no longer needed – Lions Social Services Chairman Sandy
Packer looked around for someone who might make use of it. She heard about
Josefa Aquilar, visited her in Palmanova, and the scooter found a new home.
Josefa,
47, was the victim of a train accident 34 years ago that left her unable to
walk. As she receives only a small disability allowance from the Government,
she has never been able to afford a scooter.

Although
Josefa lives with Antonio, her husband of 29 years, daughter Laura, 26, and son
Daniel, 17, who all help her in her daily life, the scooter has given her a
freedom she could not enjoy before.
“I’m
so happy to have been loaned the scooter by the Lions,” said Josefa. “It makes
life much easier as I can get out of the house and be more independent.”
